Mary S. Anaya, 93, of Roswell, NM, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2017 surrounded by her loved ones in her home in Albuquerque, NM., where she had resided for the last twelve years. Mary was preceded in death by her father Reyes C. Sandoval, mother Elvira G. Sandoval, her husband Pete G. Anaya, and her daughter Cyndi Lou Adams.
Mary, a miner’s daughter, was born on October 26, 1923 to Reyes C. Sandoval and Elvira Gamboa Sandoval in Bisbee, AZ. At the age of 3, her mother passed leaving the raising of Mary to her father and grandmother, Santos Carreaga Sandoval. Shortly after her mother’s passing, the family uprooted and migrated to Wilmington, CA., where the men of the family found work as long shore men working the docks of San Pedro and Long Beach. The American dream was alive and well for the Sandoval family. Mary was raised as an only child in a very close-knit family environment, which helped her build a strong foundation of family values, values that helped Mary live through the Great Depression and WWII. Mary was very proud of her contribution to America’s war effort by serving as a “Rosie the Riveter” in the manufacturing of B-52 bombers. It was in California that Mary met her husband, Pete G. Anaya, the man she dearly loved. Mary and Pete moved to Roswell, NM and married on June 6, 1946. This dynamic team created a union where the following came to be: six children, 12 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.
Immediately upon her arrival in Roswell, NM, Mary was active in the fight for social justice and human rights. Hailed as the “Voice of the Poor,” she worked tirelessly to better the Roswell community, and is remembered for the many letters she wrote and phone calls made on behalf of the people she served. Mary served as Director of the Poe Corn Center before leaving to serve on Roswell’s City Council for 18 years.
Among her accomplishments, Mary sat on the Governor’s Respiratory Advisory Board, the NM Endowment for the Humanities Board, the ENMMC Advisory Board, and served on the New Mexico Humanities Council. She assisted in organizing the American GI Forum, helped overturn the English-only speaking policy in schools, pushed for the first Hispanic to the City Council and to the Roswell Police Force, and gained a new drainage system for the south side of Roswell.
She is recognized in the Congressional Record with the following citation: “Though her tenacity alone is commendable, there is much more that deserves recognition. Mary, who represented Ward 5, was an example of true representation, always putting her constituents’ needs first. Comprised of many of the city’s low-income, Mary was a champion of issues her constituents faced daily. She was an advocate of quality of life issues, such as healthcare, housing, and community development. She worked tirelessly to improve primary healthcare, and because of her hard work, a primary healthcare facility, La Casa de Buena Salud, was built in Roswell.”
Mary was active politically, helping and befriending governors, members of Congress and judges. Mary will be remembered for going door to door and house to house, getting people to the voting polls, to perform their duties to vote. She is honored for the work she did in her fight against racial and social discrimination. In 1981, Mary was inducted into the Democratic Hall of Fame, and in 1992, she and her husband were elected Don Y Dona by the Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce.
Mary brought great joy and happiness to her family and people she loved. She was her husband’s anchor, both remembered for their service and many contributions to their community. Her grandchildren remember the boundless love she bestowed on each of them, always telling them how very special they were, and often going out of her way to do whatever they asked, from playing games with them to baking cookies or cooking their favorite meal.
Mary’s faith was steadfast in her belief and trust in Jesus Christ, her Savior. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Parish, and was a member of the women’s group, the Legion of Mary.
Mary is survived by her daughter M. Sandra Jonas, wife of Fred Jonas of Albuquerque, NM, John A. Anaya of Albuquerque, Pedro J. Anaya, husband of Lydia Ann Bell of San Antonio, TX, Elvira Carabajal, wife of Bobby Carabajal of Roswell, and Luana Dutchover of Roswell. She is survived by her grandchildren, Denise Denis, Melissa Chavez, Deidra McCracken, Andrea Willis, Jerrod P. Anaya, Michael Adams, Bradley Adams, Matthew Adams, Robbie Carabajal, Joshua Carabajal, Gilbert John Dutchover, Giovanna Dutchover and 24 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Ballard Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Rosary following from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2017 with burial procession following at South Park Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Adams, Bradley Adams, Jerrod P. Anaya, Robbie Carabajal, Joshua Carabajal, and Craig Buzzard. A reception will be held at Fr. Juan Montoya Reception Hall immediately following services.
We will always be carrying your memory in our hearts. We will remember the verse in scripture you so much loved:
John 14:2: “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”

“Don’t cry baby, if this is what the good Lord wants then this is what is meant to be. I’m ready to go home.”

Silvia G. Wilde, 62, left this earth in the early morning hours of June 24, 2017. She was surrounded by the love of her family and was at peace. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 7 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Church of Dexter, NM. A memorial service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church of Dexter, NM, on Friday, June 30, 2017, at 10 a.m. Internment will follow services at Hagerman Cemetery. A tribute of Silvia’s life may be found at andersonbethany.com where you may leave memories and expressions of sympathy for her family.
On August 30, 1954, Silvia was born to Marcos and Dolores Granados in Artesia, NM. Silvia was one of 7 children, and fondly recalled childhood memories of working in the fields picking cotton, chile, and even cucumbers. Silvia was never afraid of hard work and continued to enjoy staying busy throughout her life. Silvia was employed at Dexter Consolidated School District, in 1973, as a Teachers Aid, where she learned her love for education and children would soon become her lifelong passion. Silvia would not have returned to school had it not been for the constant encouragement given to her by her bosses Dennis Pabst and Patricia Parsons. In 1984, she had a daughter, Heather, who would be her only child. After attending ENMU-Roswell and ENMU-Portales, Silvia graduated with her Bachelors in Education and her Bilingual Endorsement and would begin her career as a Kindergarten teacher in 1995. Along the way, Silvia attended Grand Canyon University, maintained an A+ average and obtained her Masters of Education in 2002. Silvia worked throughout her time attending school and was fortunate enough to have family who helped and supported her dreams along the way. In 2012, under the advice of her physician and family, Silvia reluctantly retired to deal with an illness. In the year she was not teaching, Silvia drove her family insane, garnering encouragement from her family to return to work. In 2013, she taught at Nancy Lopez, and from 2014 until her death, she returned to the valley and taught at Hagerman Elementary. In 2003, Silvia would receive the first of her greatest joys, her grandson, Jacen. In 2009, Giovanni was born, and in 2010, Jaxon was born. Anyone who knew Silvia knew that she lived for “her boys.” She was present for practices, games, graduations, skinned knees, nightmares, early morning fevers and all day long laughter. Silvia was more like a second mom to her boys, rather than a Grandma. Her daily plans revolved around their schedules, and her future plans revolved around them as well, she always intended to be close by to make sure each one had the best chances available to them. Also in 2008, Silvia gained more than just a son-in-law, Anthony became her son. Silvia loved him as if he were her own, and she became his “#6” (watch The Croods, you’ll understand).
Silvia loved reading and learning new things. When she learned how to navigate Google, she loved looking things up and saying to her boys “Google it.” Silvia had a passion for learning new words; she loved having an extensive vocabulary. Silvia enjoyed reading mystery novels, watching Bones, Castle, CSI, Murder She Wrote, Alaskan Bush People and Sleepy Hollow. She enjoyed taking the boys to the movies and loved Pixar movies most of all. Silvia enjoyed burning popcorn and was only content if the other members of her family could smell it. She was a good cook, an even better baker, but greatly enjoyed Anthony’s BBQ more than anything else. Silvia secretly loved the family Chihuahua, Beans, even though to hear her tell it, you would think otherwise. Silvia loved her mom’s cooking, especially her beans and tortillas. She enjoyed drinking coffee and tea and had a special love for teacups and saucers. Silvia loved plants and flowers and enjoyed arguing with her daughter over planting them in the yard. Silvia’s greatest love and joy came from her “babies” at school. She loved the children she met and taught over the years and was filled with joy when she saw them all grown up with children and happy lives of their own. Silvia spoke of teaching and getting back to her kids up until the very end. To all her babies, young and old, you gave her purpose and unending joy.
Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Heather and son-in-law, Anthony Fajardo; grandsons: Jacen, Giovanni, and Jaxon; mother, Dolores Granado; sisters: Frances Granado, Guadalupe Gutierrez; brothers: Joe Granado, and Ramon (Yolanda) Granado. Silvia leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Silvia is preceded in death by her father, Marcos Granados; brothers: Concepcion “John”, Savino, and Gabriel Granado.
The family would like to thank all of the UMC Hospital staff, especially ICU nurses Apryl and Jessica, Calvin Clark, FNP and Juan Garcia, FNP of Dr. McPherson’s team, Joey Stone, FNP and Dr. LaPointe, of Neurosurgery, Dr. Winn and the Infectious Disease team, Sandra Scherepeel, NP of the support care team, and the staff of Kindred Hospice. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Gali of Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, to whom they will always be grateful for his expertise and kind, caring attitude. Special thanks to her mom, Dolores and her sister, Frances who stayed by her side until the end, and to her friends and family who called, prayed and visited.
This tribute was lovingly written in honor of Silvia by her family.

One thing he would do was encourage his family to make sure we finished our schooling so we could also expand our knowledge as he did. Joe’s number one hobby was gardening. He especially loved caring for his rosebushes and would always say, “These rosebushes will be here long after I’m gone, so please take care of them.” Joe’s greatest talent was music, especially playing the guitar.
